Soft Heart: A Chatarunga-Free Practice

Christen Bakken

The Yoga Sutras state that our practice should be steady and sweet. In our culture and day-to-day lives, we have come to value strength. We want to complete our to-do lists, climb the corporate ladder, and complete marathons. We are looking for firm abs, jiggle-free arms, and a firm (but full) booty. In this practice, we will explore the balance of cultivating strength where it is needed and allowing sweetness and softness where possible. The chaturanga (and even downdog and plank) have been taken out of this practice. It is deceivingly challenging while sending an energetic reminder that softness in the heart can be one of our greatest virtues. "May my foundation be firm and my heart be soft" is a mantra for moving and living.

Saraswati Hangs the Stars

Shannon Paige

Myths are powerful teachers. Believing this, let’s weave the telling of a great story into a slow flow and rejuvenative restorative yoga practice. The hallmarks of the Mythic Motion, Slow Flow and Restore practice style are breath-centric action, poetic imagery, and a deeply meditative current. With that and a movement emphasis on lower back health, this session will engage myth in motion through the telling of how the great goddess, Saraswati, hung the stars and caused time to fall into order. This practice is suitable for any level of healthy practitioner wanting a unique exploration into embodied story telling.

A Warrior In Self Care

Valerie D’Ambrosio

When beginning anything new, many of us have a habit of judging and/or berating ourselves during the process, as we seek for perfection. The only thing is that the negative energy we are putting into the practice and toward ourselves, will only result in struggle and potentially even suffering.

Cultivating self-care is something that our asana practice can offer us, which is entirely incumbent on our willingness to show up with kindness toward ourselves as we learn something new.

In this beginner yoga class we compassionately guide the body into a soft opening in order to have a deeper, healthier and perhaps even more happier relationship with Warrior One; a posture many people have a negative neuro-association to.

Guidelines for a Balanced Life: Building blocks

Les Leventhal

Inversions: Handstand, forearm balance and tri-pod headstand. We get so familiar in looking at things through one lens. Give yourself permission to grow the muscles of courage and trust - key ingredients to navigating fear in our lives. Go upside down. I wish I could tell you that these 3 poses would eliminate fear in your life. I cannot. What I can do is make you a promise: Practice this video with or without any of the variations I offer, at least once a week, and you will learn to navigate fear in your life off the mat. The power that you will feed your body from these poses will create strength and vitality in your soul that will carry you through all of life's experiences. I would not say that if it was not my experience. These poses are like the 9th step promises from recovery for me. They deliver every time. Trust and Courage, will always materialize if we work for them. Have a blast. This video is meant to be super fun.

Find Strength Through Your Feet

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter One

If we’re honest, aging can bring a host of challenges. We won't always feel our best or our strongest, but we can practice yoga in a way that supports our vitality and muscles. In time, this will translate into a stronger practice on our mats and in our life.

To build strength, we start with the feet. The feet can become tight and rigid, losing flexibility and overall strength. We start with the feet because they have to support us for many years to come and are often overlooked in our practice. Exercises include how to massage and care for your feet. How to strengthen and how to flex, point and "floint." Yoga poses demonstrated with correct foot alignment include Mountain (Tadasana), Forward Fold (Uttanasana), Hero's Pose (Virasana), Half Moon (Ardha Chandrasana), Seated Wide Angle (Upavistha Konasana), and Extended Leg Pose (Supta Padangusthasana). Approximately 30 minutes. This class is mostly a demonstration of poses with detailed alignment for you to practice.

Steady is the New Strong: Legs

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Two.

Showing up is the key to moving forward, and to show up we depend on the legs. We don’t want to hide from the changes in midlife; we want to "stand tall" and be ready for what may come.

This video details how to align, practice and firm the muscles of the legs. Poses and exercises include hamstring stretches in Forward Fold (Uttanasana), Standing Wide-Legged Fold (Prasarita Padottanasana), Standing Figure Four (Eka Pada Galavasana prep), Warrior 3 Pose Standing One Leg Pose (Utthita Hasta Padongusthasana), Half Pigeon (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana), the Splits pose (Hanumanasana) Standing Baby Dancer (Natarajasana) and more. Community and Connection: Knees and Hips

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Three.

Human beings are not meant to live in isolation, and yet social disconnectedness is a problem in present-day society. Yoga can counteract the negative effects of isolation and build community in group practice. Our bodies are also a way to see ourselves as part of a connected whole.

In this video, we work with the knees and hips so our joints are connected to the “whole community” of the body. Exercises teach the concept of "shins in" and "thighs out," as well as "shins forward" and "thighs back." We work to create length and resilience in the calf muscles, and strength above the knee in the VMO muscle. Poses include Warrior 2, Downward Facing Dog Pose, Side Angle Pose (Parsvakonasana), Triangle (Trikonasana), Sitting Head to Knee Pose (Janusirsasana), Low Lunge Pose (Anjaneyasana), and a variation of Cowface Pose (Gomukasana). Approximately 30 minutes; This class is mostly a demonstration of poses with detailed alignment for you to practice.

Have Faith, Abdominal Strength

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Four

Aging can bring all sorts of challenges we cannot control. To give us support and build trust in the Universe, we want to develop a strong core. A strong core keeps us together. Desiree shows with our fearless model Cat, how to do abdominal bracing, a technique to help find the “rib anchor.” We work with Desiree’s “string of pearls” concept of slow-moving strength. Poses include Boat (Navasana), a supine twist (Jatara Parivartanasana), Plank variations, seated wide angle pose, (Upavistha Konasana), an inversion, and Crow Pose (Bakasana). There is nothing like the possibility of falling on your face to build trust in the Divine! This video requires a yoga belt, a tie or any long string. Be the Change, Shouldering On!

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Five

Change happens. It’s happening even at this moment. We have no choice but to carry on. We carry the weight of the world on our fragile shoulders. They can become tight and rounded as well as weak. With the help of our fearless model Maria, Desiree shows how to properly position and work with the shoulder girdle. Stretches often use a yoga belt. Poses include Reverse Plank (Purvottanasana), Forearm Plank, Side Plank (Vasisthasana), Cobra (Bhujangasana), Upward Facing Dog, the yoga “push-up,” (Chaturanga), a proper Downward Facing Dog and more. If you practice correctly, you will build strong, resilient shoulders. this practice is mostly a detailed demonstration of poses.

Warrior Heal Thyself: The Neck

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Six

Our fragile necks! Who designed this body where a 10-pound “bowling ball” of a head is balanced on seven tiny cervical bones? Certainly, not us. But nevertheless, here we are in a new age where we spend more time than ever in a forward position looking at technology screens. While this chapter delves into all the major physical challenges that older warriors face in life, our yoga concentrates on the neck. Problems with the neck – including vertigo, fracture and nerve damage from bulging discs – are now prevalent in midlife. In this video, Desiree shows exercises to build strength and the proper placement of the head in her “double-chin face.” Poses include Warrior One, Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), a variation of Bridge called Chatush Padasana, the bow (Dhanurasana) and wheel poses (Urdhva Dhanurasana) and more. This class is mostly a detailed demonstration of postures to practice.

Equanimity and Balance: The Wrists

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty, Chapter Seven.

If we’re going to feel balanced in life, we need to appreciate the passage of time, and use the “all of it” along the way. This includes our wrists and hands. Unfortunately, wrist injury is becoming all too common among yogis of all ages. In this video, we show you how to massage your wrists, stretch and lengthen the fingers, and then strengthen the hands in yoga. Poses include proper placement of the hands and wrists in Downward Facing Dog, Plank Pose, the yoga “push-up” (Chaturanga) and a stretch in Uttanasana variation called “Gorilla.” The peak pose is the ultimate wrist/arm balance, Peacock (Mayurasana). This class is mostly detailed demonstration of the poses to practice.

Fearless Flyers: Safety First with Inversions

Desiree Rumbaugh & Michelle Marchildon

Fearless After Fifty: Bonus Video

Who doesn’t want to fly, feel strong and build trust in the Universe? That’s what we’re having, but to be honest, older warriors have more risk when it comes to balancing out the rewards. We must have proper shoulder alignment or else we can create real and lasting problems in our upper bodies. We must be safe-ish, as a fall at sixty could likely break a hip. Therefore, we show you how to build your inner badass, at a wall. We can’t absolutely guarantee that bad things won’t happen, after all, this is life and we’re all in it together. However, if you follow these tips, you will learn how to approach an inversion practice with fearlessness, and safety first. This class is mostly a detailed demonstration of postures to practice.

Yoga Alchemy: The Axis

Mark Morford

The practice of locating, if you will, the true center of your being, your essence nature, your divine Self.

You’ve heard these yogic buzzwords before? Doubtless you have. But what the hell do they mean?

We begin with some potent core work, moving into vigorous, decidedly physically demanding series designed specifically to draw your attention *away* from the unreliable, addictive noise of the mind and those ever-fickle emotions, toward the deep, eternal, always-on, always-there, incorruptible “place” in you, the sacred axis around which everything else – your wants, doubts, judgements, melodramas, issues, text messages, relationship dramas – orbits and swirls.

You know this place? Of course you do. It’s been with you your entire life. Locate this place, brighten it, work and dance and pray and practice and bless others from it, and watch the world transform.

True North Flow

Kristin Gibowicz

In many yoga postures we are seeking Tadasana or mountain pose alignment. True North is a beautiful way to learn how to encompass this central alignment in our minds through setting intention, and in our bodies by contracting muscles that support the natural curvature of our spine. We learn this in our spirit by connecting to a higher place through breath. This 20 minute flow brings awareness to True North Alignment in poses such as mountain, plank, side plank, crescent lunge, chaturanga and tree. Take some time to re-align!

Untie the Knot!

Shannon Paige

Connected and Conversational Arm Balances: Astavakrasana to Eka Pada Koundinyasana

Tension is a brilliant teacher. The trick is to let the tension be strong rather than hardened. By leveraging the art of deep inward connection, engagement and embodiment, to the point of being mindfully tied in an arm balancing knot, one can stretch the tension out like a suspension bridge to support and sustain more extended postures. To this end, we will progress from simple to complex, layer progressive actions and openings, to embody the techniques and strength to allow a growing confidence and conversation between two arm balances at our apex peak expression. Beyond the exploration of arm balance connection, the effects of this practice are ease in the neck and shoulders in addition to opening the hips, quadriceps and hamstrings. Though it is a strong practice, you will feel gooooood leaving the mat!

This class also has a solid flow element making it a very active class. Be prepared to balance on your hands and your feet, twist, crunch and stretch!
