Hatha Yoga

When most of us in the west talk about yoga, we’re talking about Hatha yoga. ‘Hatha’ is the combination of two Sanskrit words: Ha, meaning Sun, and Tha, meaning moon. As a concept, Hatha represents the balance of opposites - hot and cold, fire and water, male and female, positive and negative. Similarly, Hatha yoga works to balance the energies of the mind with those of the body through physical exercises (asanas), controlled breathing and calming the mind with meditation and relaxation.

Iyengar Yoga is a style of yoga that will meet you where you are. It emphasizes proper body alignment, and use of yoga props. Depending on how they are used, props can make poses more accessible, or they can add a greater challenge.

Iyengar Yoga teaches us how to identify and work from the foundation of a yoga posture. In a beginning class, we do this by learning standing poses. This would make the foundation our feet and legs, and we will address that in depth through triangle pose, side angle pose, and warrior 2. You will also learn to sense your foundation underneath you when you are seated and lying down to rest in relaxation. Enjoy!
