Ashtanga Yoga

Many of today’s most popular forms of yoga trace their roots back to the Ashtanga style. Ashtanga is a part of the vinyasa tradition, steadily flowing between poses with synchronized breath. Traditionally, Ashtanga’s specific system of sequential poses means the primary, intermediate or advanced series you perform in your practice is same as the primary, intermediate or advanced series performed by yogis all over the world. Though some instructors vary the traditional sequencing with additional poses and postures, the Ashtanga style is always a great choice for yogis looking for a mentally invigorating and physically challenging class.

Ashtanga Modified Primary Series

Jack Cuneo

Ashtanga Vinyasa is one of the classic forms of asana practice that brought yoga to America. It's still thriving today, thanks to the tireless work of its students and lineage-holders. This class will move you through a modified form of Ashtanga's Primary Series (the first sequence students begin to learn), which features Sun Salutations, followed by a rigorous set of standing and balancing poses and many deep, unusual postures. Note to experienced Ashtangis: this class modifies several of the most extreme moments of Primary Series, and does not include headstand, shoulderstand, or the Kurmasana section of the series. If you have learned these poses in-person from a skilled instructor, feel free to add them into your practice!

Jack Cuneo shines a respectful, devoted light on this practice: "Ashtanga Vinyasa was my initiation into yoga. I am not exclusively devoted to the style, but I hope my love and experience with it comes through and benefits you. Because the Ashtanga Vinyasa system is deep and precise, if you enjoy my Ashtanga classes, I highly recommend that you seek out a Certified or Authorized teacher to learn this practice in a traditional way!"

Ashtanga Primary Series Lite

Alik Brundrett

For those of you that want an Ashtanga Primary Series class, but found Alik's full-length 120 min Primary Series class too long or challenging, we made this Ashtanga Lite class just for you!

Yoga Chikitsa, the Sanskrit title for the Ashtanga Primary Series, means yoga therapy - a program that when done regularly (so the story goes) cures your ailments and purifies the physical body to make you ready for deeper yogic practice - both physical and meditative. This is a traditional style of yoga first introduced to the west by K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. It takes its name from the 8 limbed (or ashta-anga) system outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra in 200 BC. Only one of Patanjali's limbs was concerned with the asanas (poses) and his treatise is primarily a roadmap toward meditation and enlightenment. Pattabhi Jois (and before him, his teacher Krishnamacharya) alleges that this system of asana practice is the practice of Patanjali.
