Ashtanga Vinyasa is one of the classic forms of asana practice that brought yoga to America. It's still thriving today, thanks to the tireless work of its students and lineage-holders. This class will move you through a modified form of Ashtanga's Primary Series (the first sequence students begin to learn), which features Sun Salutations, followed by a rigorous set of standing and balancing poses and many deep, unusual postures. Note to experienced Ashtangis: this class modifies several of the most extreme moments of Primary Series, and does not include headstand, shoulderstand, or the Kurmasana section of the series. If you have learned these poses in-person from a skilled instructor, feel free to add them into your practice!

As with all my classes, we take some time to build the poses from the ground up, but after one time through the flow, we are moving breath to breath.

This is a balancing flow class that will open your hips and have your legs shaking. You can expect, chair pose, standing splits, standing figure four and my favorite of all the warriors, warrior three. Once our body is warmed up I invite you to move from half moon to chapasana as well as wild thing.

We’re all a mix of masculine active energy (solar) and feminine receptive energy (lunar). Sometimes life jolts us out of equilibrium and we can feel too aggressive or too passive. This class is designed to address and shift this imbalance so you feel strong, yet soft.

You’ll start with Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) to balance the left and right sides of your brain. Then, a warming Yang Vinyasa flow will help you burn off excess prana. The second half of class is a juicy Yin practice where you’ll hold poses like Butterfly, Sphinx and Sleeping Swan for a few minutes each to encourage your parasympathetic nervous system to kick in and relax.
