The Smallest Change

Kristen Boyle

"The smallest change done with the greatest of attention can have the largest impact."

This class pivots on one alignment principle - supporting the natural curve of the lumbar spine and working strength in the upper back to broaden the chest, thereby undoing the "tucking" and forward-head posture that is chronic with our culture of chairs, computers and the notorious "text-asana!"

This principle is applied to poses throughout the class, culminating in ustrasana (camel) and eka pada kapotasana (pigeon) with a novel approach. The postures used in this class are accessible to students of all levels, but the precise cueing and alignment principle applied to the class create a more advanced application of the postures. This is a great class for both intermediate and advanced practitioners to experience more strength, depth, and freedom.

Kristen recommends using the following playlist for this class: Spotify playlist for The Smallest Change

Super Okay: A Practice of Contentment

Christen Bakken

Do you always see the next problem coming or do you face challenge as it arises? It can be easy to constantly prepare for what "could" go wrong- anything from completely losing your balance in a pose to completely losing your balance in your life. Santosha (the fourth Niyama - contentment) is a practice to remember that all we need, we already have. It softens the edges of judgement and constant anxiety. Together we learn, practice, and remember to face challenge as it comes. We celebrate and remain present as often as we can. The physicality of this practice is vigorous vinyasa flow with an emphasis on open hearted poses and balance.

Soulful Slow Flow

Eric Paskel

Soulful Slow flow is a slow moving vinyasa class without any sun salutations. The slower moving class provides more time to enter and exit positions while having some "quality" time in the pose. There is plenty to work on physically, yet with no sun salutations and slower moving flows, there is a steadiness that provides room to reflect and to listen while moving. Turn it on now and you won't need to turn off all day.

Bad Ass Drop Backs

Jeanie Manchester

This is a no nonsense, "let's get to it" backbend technique workshop that assumes you already have a strong practice and want to get down to it in an hour. We go straight at the backbends with a strong warm up, good flow and then a pause as we take time to open the shoulders at the wall in handstands and Pinchya Myurasana ( forearm balance) We work our quads open and then into a deep twist before diving into Ustrasana (Camel Pose) to full bow pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), and then learning to come up and drop back at the wall. A strong, focused class which will stimulate the nervous system and bring more joy and freedom to your hip flexors, and a nice cool down and Savasana to leave you calm and peaceful. Enjoy!

Forrest Yoga: Safe and Intelligent Back Bending

Cheryl Deer

Led by Cheryl Deer

In this class you will explore back bending movements in a safe way that frees energy and blood flow along the spine. Cheryl intelligently guides you through the Forrest Yoga breath work, abdominals, shoulder openers and sun salutations that prepare you for an energizing and strong wheel pose. This is an effective class that will bring new insights and space in mind and body!

One of the props for this class is a Forrest Yoga Mat Roll, you can also use a rolled up towel.

The steps to make a Forrest Yoga Mat Roll
1. Use an old yoga mat, or buy a thin cheap one at the store.
2. Fold the mat into thirds, lengthwise.
3. Move to the long end of the mat and roll the mat up as tightly as you can (sleeping bag style).
4. Once you see the width you desire (depending on hip size or personal preference) cut the tail end off with scissors. If it’s perfect as is, no need to cut.
5. Wrap your mat roll with something to hold it tight: rubber bands, fun colored duct tape, stretchy headbands, etc.
6. Voila! Mat roll complete.
Now, you have a tool that will expedite your healing process, massage your organs, and strengthen those inner thighs & abs like no tomorrow. Congratulations on creating one of the most useful props in yoga!

Give it All Your Heart

Christen Bakken

Backbending lends a yogi to the greatest sensation of heart opening, for sure. In this practice we will head in that direction, but will consider bringing our heart into all we do. Finding alignment of shoulders back and sternum forward sends the body into a whole hearted practice. Inside of the physical work, we will explore the concept of generosity and abundance in the way we live an open hearted life. Learning how not to blow an energetic gasket, but also not to hoard our sweet energy in our practice and in our life will lend itself to greater sense of fulfillment and purpose.

Open Your Heart to Gratitude

Elise Fabricant

In this heart-opening class we will invite in gratitude along with our physical practice of backbending. To cultivate length and lower back health in our backbends, we learn to unwind the front of hips and pelvis with lunge variations. Moving on to shoulder opening, we pay special attention to the musculature between the shoulder blades. Finally, this class culminates in supine backbends that both energize and soften the heart center. Appropriate for all levels, this class will calm the seasoned practitioner and challenge the new one.

Deeper Down the Road to Backbends

Kristen Boyle

This class is designed to get you further down the road to backbends. Back health and healthy, safe backbending, require an acute awareness of the front body and core strength. Yes, it also involves flexibility in the spine, but even more than that, it requires strength. The thoracic spine is an area that in our daily lives of computers, texting, driving, rounded shoulders and forward heads, gets overstretched and weakened. This class will bring your awareness to that area of the body that you can take off the mat of your asana practice, hopefully into your everyday life, where you can enjoy healthier posture and spine strength.

Itzak Pearlman, one of the greatest violinists of our time, was greeting patrons after a performance. One man came up to him, and said, “Mr. Pearlman, I admire your work so much. I play my violin every day. I would give my life to play as you do!” Mr. Pearlman responded simply, “I have.”

In that powerful moment, pause, reflect. That thing that you want so much. How badly do you want it? How much more are you willing to work for it? And, what are you willing to give up in order to achieve it?

Not all of us can be destined to be the greatest. But each one of us has something, some singular thing that we are working towards. And with more effort, dedication, and sacrifice, you can achieve it. The qualities you bring to your asana practice translate through the layers of your being, into how you approach your life.

Turn & Churn the Spine

Patrick Montgomery

Are some poses easier on one side than the other? This intermediate practice balances asymmetrical patterns of strength and weakness from side-to-side and coaxes the spine back to center. Many poses are held for several breaths allowing time to explore their inner workings –particularly how to properly rotate the torso. This strong, slow flow sequence features side bends, opposite arm and leg balances, a mandala of standing postures including Parighasana (Gate Pose) and side plank variations leading to the peak pose, Kapinjalasa (Side Plank Bow Pose). Ideal for yogis with imbalances, scoliosis and anyone who wants to feel more magic pulsing through their spine.

Flow for a Grateful Heart

Christen Bakken

Every season is a great season for gratitude. In this well-rounded sequence, we will shift and move energy with a balance of forward folds, twists, and side-bends. We will balance on one leg and on our hands, only to conclude with an offering of the heart in a strong back-bend series. While a grateful heart may arrive on one breath and leave on the next, we will create collective energy honoring the space of abundance and freedom and remember that all of this is physical and spiritual practice, not perfect. Expect to move and be moved.

Yoga Al Dente

Angie Arnold

Ever taken a yoga class that felt undercooked? Or too much packed in leaving you overdone? Yoga Al Dente is yoga done just right. Angie's cues keep you present on the mat, and the class is sequenced for each breath and movement to truly compliment the next breath and the next movement. Each part helps to create the whole. Expect some tricky core work that will support your lower back as you move towards urdhva dhanurasana (wheel pose) and potentially Vrschikasana (scorpion pose) in both forearm stand or handstand. Vinyasa translates as "to go to a place in a special way." That place is savasana. Angie's goal is to move the body and mind so thoughtfully you can let go, restore, and surrender to the sweet support of your mat.
