Yoga for Athletes: IT Band & Hips

Kylie Larson

This class is focused on the IT band, the ligament that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin. IT Band Syndrome is one of the most common overuse injuries in endurance athletes like runners and cyclists. If you have been experiencing pain in that area, this class is a MUST DO!

In order to really dive into the IT band, we must also get into the hips and the hamstrings so you can expect to stretch those areas as well.

We begin this class in a supine position, prepping the hips, hamstrings and IT band for deeper stretches, and each series of poses moves a little deeper into the body. You will also flow a bit in this class to help build heat in the body and suppleness in the joint.

I hope that you also take away a few new stretches that you can incorporate into your post-run or ride stretching routine.

Kylie Larson

This class is a slow flow focused on the lower half of the body, mainly the hips, hamstrings and quadriceps. Because of the physical focus, this class is great for any athlete, gym rat or regular Joe with tight hamstrings.

After spending time stretching the above mentioned body parts, you will give Hanumanasana, or the splits, a try. If you've never done hanumanasana before, give this class a try! This class isn't for the people who are naturally flexible, this class is for all my tight, inflexible friends!

Yoga With Weights1 hour

Fitness 'n' Yoga + Weights: Boxing Class

Ben Davis

If you are looking for a change in your yoga sculpt routine Fitness 'n' Yoga + Weights: Boxing Class is for you. This class gets you warmed up with general conditioning exercises that include jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, and imaginary jump rope. Once warmed up you will progress through a series of punching exercises to help you hone your technique. Weights will be added to strengthen and condition your body as you reinforce your boxing skills. Light weights are recommended.

One thing to keep in mind as you progress through this class is the harder you punch with the weights the more the momentum of the weights will take control of your movements. Instead, focus on tempo and rhythm and the mechanics of your body as you punch to get the best results. It is more about how the components of the body work together to move the arm rather than the strength of the arm when you punch.

The most important thing is to have fun while you work up a sweat!

Cycle Yoga: Cardio Strength and Stretch

Ben Davis

Fitness 'n' Yoga: Cycle/Yoga is a 30 minute cycle ride followed by a 30 minute yoga class. This video will give you the perfect balance of cardio, flexibility and strength.

The main focus of the cycle portion of this video is cycling with the rhythm of the music. Cycling with the rhythm of the music will set your rpm's or revolutions per minute. Once your rpm's are set the appropriate amount of resistance will be added to match the speed of the legs and maximize your power output or watts. The greater your power output the more calories you will burn during the ride. Other actions and movements such as cat pose, chaturanga and airplane arms will be incorporated once the rhythm and resistance is set to help tone the upper body while the lower body works. Get ready to groove as you move to the rhythm of the music!

Following the cycle ride will be a 30 minute yoga class. The yoga section of this video is designed to help you lightly tone and gently stretch your body bringing you back into balance.

Enjoy!

Bike setup:

1. Seat height is determined by the extension of the legs. Full extension of the legs with a slight bend to prevent hyper extension.

2. Handle bar height is at seat height or slightly higher.

3. Space between handle bar and seat is determined by placing the palms of the hands on the front of the handle bar while pedaling with the knees relatively under the elbows.

QiFlow Body Ability

Dawnelle Arthur

"Your body will get better at whatever you do or don't do. If you don't move you will get better at not moving. If you move, your body will allow more movement." -Ido Portal

The QiFlow movement method “wu wei” is a practice in effortless action, strength, beauty and FLOW. It’s a method that constantly evolves and expands as I explore the movement world outside of yoga.

There are five elements to the QiFlow movement method:

1. Body Knowledge
2. SportConditioning
3. PerformanceTraining
4. MobilityFlow®
5. BodyAbility

This video focuses on Element 5: BodyAbility. A practice of movements and shapes that are meant to challenge and change you. As explained in Ido’s statement above…your body will get better at whatever you do or don’t do. At first you will struggle, but through practice and perseverance you will find your way. This is a class you should take at least once per week for six weeks. Nothing is easy until it becomes easy. When it becomes easy, it’s time to make it hard again. Practice what you can’t do. Become a curious student. Being curious and playing curious, makes life more fun. Your body is capable of more than you think. Put the time in and results will happen. Move smart. If you’re a yogi who has only focused on flexibility then take the time to prep yourself by committing to the MobilityFlow® challenge before taking this class. The QiFlow approach is new movement, new results. It takes time, but it’s worth it in the end.

Even though my QiFlow classes are no longer consider ‘yoga’ it is my mission and my path to help create better movers in the yoga world. QiFlow is not meant to replace your yoga practice or your workout/crossfit regime; it's design is to help all movers become more knowledgable, challenged and transformed. One MobilityFlow® and one QiFlow® class per week will prepare your mind and body for your sport. Your sport is yoga. You’re an athlete. Your sport is CrossFit, you are an athlete. If you move your body and train in a system, that makes you an athlete. You need to train for your sport. This is the message of QiFlow. It’s an enhancement method designed to help athletes move and perform at higher level. It’s not yoga, but it’s just as important.

Yoga for Triathletes: Post-Training Practice

Claire Petretti Marti

This short class is specifically designed with the busy triathlete in mind. Triathletes are unique because they compete at peak levels in three physically demanding sports. Over time, this extreme training can cause imbalances in the body, which can result in injury if not addressed.

Yoga can help by going beyond simple stretching to work the muscles and joints through all ranges of motion. By working the body through all planes of motion, yoga creates balance, stability, core strength and flexibility. The focus on breathing also enhances mental focus.

Perfect after a swim, a bike, a run...or any time!

By engaging every joint in your body the correct way you drastically decrease your chance of injury. Mobility is your first step towards flexibility and freedom.
