Welcome to Day 4 of the 21-Day Yoga Challenge: Time to Shine!

Thursday, September 12. 

Part of new challenges or endeavors is overcoming fear. Being happier, and shining brighter in the world could subconsciously be scary, and it might be easier to stay safe.

Why is this true for some people? Because it's easy to be comfortable with what you know and where you're at, and change, whether good or bad, can be easy to resist.

Whether you've been playing small to keep comfortable, or are just scared to make changes you know will pay off in the long run, this challenge is a catalyst to be brave.

Today's classes echo that sentiment. Fear often keeps people from trying inversions, so Desiree's class will help with that. Mark's class will move your entire body, and share a theme of bravery. Enjoy your practice today!

Build Inversions Safely with Desiree Rumbaugh

30 min class | Level: Adv. Beginner & Up | Intensity: Everyday Namaste

Unless you have had gymnastics training, you will probably notice that Inversions are very challenging and sometimes seemingly impossible poses. Beginning to practice inversions as an adult is an extraordinary achievement and one we believe is worth your time. It is, however, very important to have the proper conditioning to make your journey safe and productive. Here is a simple routine designed to prepare you physically and mentally for this feat. If you have tight shoulders, take more time during the week to do the shoulder stretching that is demonstrated in this video. Also, practice the preparations for inversions without going fully upside down often so you become more accustomed to the blood pressure changes that occur when you are upside down.

This question comes up a lot these days: In periods of deep dismay and anxiety, of dread existential, sociopolitical and/or personal, how can we use our yoga to successfully transmute these low, acidic energies into useful action, into something a bit more healing and constructive? And where, exactly, does this fiery transformation take place? What are the tools? 

This much we know: Such transformations do not happen merely in the mind, by merely thinking (or wishing) events to be different. What’s more, yoga teaches us not to race through or forcibly redefine uncomfortable or painful situations – or grip the positive ones too tightly - let we miss their true power and teachings. 

Here’s a fiery, nicely demanding class focusing on the Muladhara chakra, on essential grounding poses (goddess, warriors, malasanas galore) and balanced breathing to help relocate and strengthen your core stability and sense of innate calm when all feels poisonous and manic and OMGWTF.
