FEATURED TEACHER - SHY SAYAR

Posted on 4/30/2021 by Yoga Download

Dear YogaDownloaders, As the great Pattabhi Jois has said: take practice and all is coming. Remember that asana, or the physical yoga of postures and transitions, is a vehicle for the transformation of consciousness, and upon or during transformation it may one day fall away. As the body ages (and it is aging, whether you begin yoga at 10 or 100), Yoga may deepen its way into your actions, your words and even your thoughts. Yet, there is no predetermined timeline for this evolution, and pretending that it is here before it is can only lead to disappointment, frustration and wasting precious life time. As long as asana gives you joy, keep practicing. As soon as it feels like a chore or a rote pattern, change it up - either with other approaches to asana or something else entirely. As long as you continue to inquire into the essential nature of the self - of reality itself - beyond all ideas and concepts, yoga will continue to deepen through you. Godspeed!

Dear YogaDownload Students, During this time of elevated stress, uncertainty and finding a rhythm with the new normal, it is important that we take the time to connect to mindfulness, movement and our breath. The beauty of yoga is that it meets us exactly where we are. Today’s practice doesn’t need to mirror yesterday’s practice or anyone else’s for that matter. Sustaining our practice, even when it is hard to, can help us to heal and stay tapped into our natural, happy nature.

Hey there, YogaDownload students! Today, I just want to commend you and offer you my respect. Why? For centuries humans have told stories about leaving home and then returning... because it's very human to forget and then remember. To change and then change again. To come back around to the same spot different from who you were when you left. If you're like me... You may disengage from taking care of your body at times. You may disengage from feeling love—for your partner or family or even yourself—at times. You may forget to breathe. You may forget to act according to your morals. You may forget to put down your phone. You may forget to change your sweatpants. This is all human and it happens. But hopefully we remember and return. We atone for those mistakes. We change those pants. So I commend you and offer you respect for all the times you come back to the things that are important to you, hopefully a bit wiser for your wandering. Cheers.

Dear YogaDownload Students, I’m so grateful to be highlighted as the teacher of the month. I feel so excited and enthusiastic when given the opportunity to film for Yoga Download and it has been a privilege to be a part of this community. Not only have I been able to connect with so many students from around the world, but I’ve really enjoyed maintaining relationships with the people behind the scenes! For me, yoga brings me home to myself and I’m so thrilled to help facilitate that for others.

Hi sweet humans, with so much change and unrest surrounding it can be hard to find your footing. Most of the things we hope are stable are not inherently stable at all. I've always found the most relief and solid footing in things that are True rather than things that sound good or feel good in the moment. The times that I have found those Truths were when I was the most devastated... whether that was because of relational pain, monetary stress or overpowering grief. The vulnerability can make us more interested in a spiritual pathway. One of the spiritual teachers that I turn to when I need a strong dose of the Truth is Pema Chödrön. Perhaps these words from her book The Wisdom of No Escape will strike you as they did me when a student shared them with me recently, as a no B.S. reminder that my footing is slippery unless it is placed wisely in the inner ground of my perception.

Dear YogaDownload students, Hi y’all and Happy August, wherever in the world you are reading this from. We’ve been back in the USA for about 18 months and the practice of yoga has been instrumental for grounding and navigating change and aging gracefully. While practicing asana, my commitment to the Yamas, Niyamas and the 5th and 6th limbs of yoga has been incredibly powerful. 5 and 6 are Pratyahara and Dharana, withdrawal of senses and focusing without interruption. So challenging, but so calming to the nervous system, the asanas and life in general.
