Yoga Gone Wild!

Yoga Gone Wild!

Yoga doesn't always have to be calm, comfortable, or familiar.

Sometimes it's fun to turn yourself upside down, bend yourself backward, try something that looks slightly crazy, and discover what happens.

Welcome to the wild side of yoga.

This week, we're stepping outside the boundaries of an everyday practice and exploring some of yoga's more adventurous territory—from deep backbends to inversions. But before you start picturing a yoga circus, there's an important distinction to make: exploring advanced poses isn't about collecting impressive shapes or proving how "good" you are at yoga.

It's about curiosity.

What happens if you approach something you've never tried before? What can your body do when you give it the right preparation? What can you learn from a pose even if you never reach its fullest expression?

Sometimes it's worth leaving the familiar behind just to find out.

Leave the Ordinary Behind

Most of our daily movement happens within a fairly predictable range. We walk forward. We sit. We stand. We bend over to pick something up.

Then yoga comes along and asks:

How about standing on your head?

Or balancing on your hands.

Or opening the entire front of your body into a deep backbend.

These shapes may look unusual, but that's part of what makes exploring them so interesting. They ask us to move our bodies differently, pay close attention, and develop strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and body awareness along the way.

Suddenly, you're not moving on autopilot anymore.

You're paying attention.

It's About the Journey, Not the Pose

When we see an advanced yoga pose, it's easy to focus entirely on the finished shape.

But there's usually a whole lot of yoga happening before you ever get there.

A deep backbend requires preparation throughout the body. An inversion involves developing strength, stability, awareness, and confidence upside down. Breaking these poses into smaller pieces gives you an opportunity to explore the skills behind them rather than simply chasing the final result.

And sometimes those building blocks are where the real progress happens.

Maybe today you find a little more openness.

Maybe you hold yourself upside down for one second longer.

Maybe you discover exactly where you need more strength.

Or maybe you decide your body has gone far enough for today.

All of those outcomes count.

Let Curiosity Lead the Way

There's something refreshing about approaching your practice with curiosity instead of expectation.

Rather than asking, Can I do this pose?, try asking, What happens if I explore it?

That small change can take some of the pressure out of advanced practice. You don't have to conquer anything. You don't have to look like the instructor. And you certainly don't need to force your body somewhere it doesn't want to go.

You can experiment.

Try a variation. Back off. Try again. Laugh when something doesn't go according to plan. Pay attention to what your body tells you.

The wild side of yoga still requires awareness. In fact, the more adventurous the pose, the more important that awareness becomes.

This Week's New Classes

Our two new classes this week invite you to venture beyond the familiar and explore some of yoga's more adventurous shapes. One takes you deep into the world of backbends, while the other turns things completely upside down. Both emphasize the preparation and building blocks that help you explore these challenging poses with greater awareness.

  • Crazy Kapotasana with Jessica Oldfield: Jessica takes a workshop-style approach to some seriously deep backbending. You'll begin by warming up and building heat before progressively preparing your body to explore Wheel, Padanghusta Dhanurasana, Kapotasana, and some fun variations along the way. This advanced practice is an opportunity to explore your range, play with possibility, and see where your backbending practice can take you.

  • Inversions with Lori Flower: Lori invites you to flip your perspective and get more comfortable upside down. Through progressive building blocks, you'll explore the strength, stability, and technique behind Headstand, Handstand, and Shoulder Stand. Rather than rushing toward the final pose, you'll work through the pieces that can help you approach inversions with greater confidence, control, and awareness.

Flip. Bend. Fly.

Every yoga practice doesn't need to take you to the edge of what's possible.

But occasionally, it can be a whole lot of fun to see what's out there.

Try something unfamiliar. Explore a new shape. Turn yourself upside down. Bend backward. Discover muscles you didn't know were involved. Surprise yourself—or find something you're definitely not ready for yet.

The goal isn't to master every pose.

It's to stay curious enough to keep discovering new things about your body and your practice.

So warm up, pay attention, respect your limits, and give yourself permission to explore.

This week, yoga is going a little wild.
