After playing live at a trance event in India, multi-instrumentalist Prem Joshua and the Dutch keyboardist Maneesh de Moor knew that they were on to a new sound--one they had to rereate in the recording studio. The result is Mudra, born from the silence of the Tuscan hills and the noise of downtown Amsterdam. On this excellent worldbeat recording, "trancey" analogue keyboard sounds fuse with sitar and ethnic flutes for a unique synthesis of ancient exotic instruments and contemporary Western grooves. Mudra promises a danceable, joyous and upbeat musical journey.
Sky Kisses Earth is a ticket to the ancient Tantric temples of India. Effortlessly, Prem Joshua blends the magic of Eastern music (sitar, tabla, flutes, santoor, etc) with transparent and modern Western sounds. These hypnotic grooves, fine textures and rich melodies will transport the listener to a cross-cultural mythic land of golden radiance.
In the vast scope of his musical expression, Prem Joshua, himself a Yatri (traveller) beyond musical traditions, creates an inspired collection of songs that reflect a deep love affair with India.People down the ages have heard a calling to sacred places within and without. In the East this journey is called Yatra (pilgrimage). If you feel this call — let this album be your travel companion.
Joshua comments on Dance Of Shakti: 'As the title suggests--it's again a more rhythmical, energetic album, and I had maximum fun doing this one. 'There are many soulful melodies on Indian instruments like bamboo flute, sitar, dilruba and santoor, flying over strong ethnic and modern grooves, hip hop, drum 'n' bass and trancey rhythms and sounds--all interwoven with Manish's 'pumping' tablas. But there is one more thing. I got totally into singing! I got into my own very contemporary version of Indian 'Tarana' singing and also chose some beautiful mantras. 'The main musicians I'm playing with are Manish Vyas, multi-instrumentalist from India; Maneesh de Moor, keyboardist from Amsterdam; and Rishi, drummer, producer and genius from Copenhagen. Of course there are also other musicians who left their juicy statements on the album, like Chintan and Dinesh from Hamsafar and great talents from the Indian and Danish music scene.'
In accordance with Prem Joshua’s musical philosophy, Taranga (Sanskrit for “wave’ or “vibe”) unites many eminent musical masters from India and Europe to create an energetic, yet intimate, recording full of depth, feeling and nuance. Refocusing on the natural, acoustic soundscapes of the sitar, bamboo flute and Indian vocals, Joshua entwines India’s ancient musical legacy with the contemporary global atmospheres of urban lounge and a touch of jazz. Prem Joshua, dubbed by the Times of India as “the guru of East-West fusion,” is India’s #1 best-selling world music artist and recipient of the 2007 Indian “Emmy” for Best Film Music on Indian TV. When he’s not performing around the world, Joshua resides in India and Italy.
Prem Joshua’s international band – formed in the lively and chaotic witches cauldron of an Indian metropolis – today stands out as one of the most refreshing multi–cultural musical experiences to be found between Bombay and Berlin. On this album, Prem Joshua & Band present the highlights of their 2007 concert tour. These live recordings feature seven new versions of Prem Joshua “classics” and two brand new tracks.
With originality, virtuosity and confidence, the quartet creates a musical masala of Indian classical, jazz, funk and chillout… a music so masterfully yet playfully blended, that it has found a place in the hearts of listeners from the East, the West and beyond.
