Introduction to Down Dog and Sun Salutations

Kristen Boyle

Led by Kristen Boyle

Stepping into a yoga class for the first time is intimidating. I often hear, "I can't do yoga, I'm not flexible enough!" That, my friend, is exactly why yoga would be good for you, because yoga brings balance to the body. Yoga will meet you where you are, and continue to challenge you, offsetting habitual movements with a practice that brings full awareness to our body's abilities and challenges.

One of the key poses in our current day yoga classes, particularly in the Vinyasa style of yoga, is Downward Facing Dog, or Adho Mukha Svanasana. Often this pose is challenging because of tight hamstrings, tight shoulders, or both. In this class we take a deeper look at the pose, from the shoulders to the back to the legs. Then we work the pose into a Vinyasa series of Sun Salutations, or Surya Namaskar A. You will feel more open and refreshed after this simple yet detailed class, guaranteed.

Dive Deeper into Down Dog

Elise Fabricant

Downward Facing Dog is probably the most commonly used poses, but is still often misunderstood. It demands much of the body, and often causes students to "muscle through" rather than refining the appropriate actions of the body.

In this alignment-based class we will warm up the hamstrings, feel the correct placement of the pelvis, work on strong, planted hands and play with the healthy rotation of the shoulders. This practice will work your mind and body, and refine and deepen Downward Dog so that you can approach an old pose in new ways.

Awaken Your Generous Spirit

Elise Fabricant

Every moment of every day provides an opportunity to cultivate more generosity of spirit. One way we can start to do this in our physical yoga practice is by opening up the heart center. In this class we start with a restorative backbend on the floor an all-levels sequence of poses which not only open the heart center but also both challenge and relax the body. We will experience the power of mudra (hand gesture) and explore where in our lives we could benefit from the practice of generosity. The effects of short class will reverberate throughout your day.

Samy Mattei designed this class for yogis with limited physical mobility - Utilize Props to Adapt Traditional Poses. An amazing way to experience the delights and benefits of yoga practice, is with the connection and assistance of a partner or assistant. The class is by no means a "passive" one; it consistently asks students to check in with their bodies and be aware of what works and what needs to change. This is the most unique of classes to create space to transcend perceived barriers, and realize we are all connected and couldn't do "this" without one another.
