Flow: Breath-Initiated Movement

Vinyasa yoga is often described as movement linked with breath. In our lives off the mat, action is often where our focus tends to drift, but we can become so action-oriented that there is no time for breath or pause. In this balanced sequence, we will practice letting the breath initiate the movement- rather than the movement initiating the breath. In the flow part of the sequence, we will use each part of the breath cycle to guide our movement. In our standing and balancing sequence, our actions may be subtle, but they will follow the guidance of the breath. Each inhale offers the opportunity to grow and each exhale offers the opportunity to surrender. Who knows when your breath might start to guide your actions off the mat? Perhaps even people in your life will begin to trust the breath in their own challenges and triumphs. Expect to sweat, be challenged, and find a sense of peace in this well-rounded practice.

Handstand help is here! Handstand pose is a wonderful teacher for our bodies to see where our practice can use some support. This short video shows ten different ways to practice the pose. One is surely the right way for you! After a quick warm up focusing on the shoulders, core and hamstrings, we are off to the wall. The instructor recommends using a wall so that you are not worried about balancing in the center of the room. We go through ten different techniques, some requiring a partner and some that you can do on your own. The video finishes with a wrist release. It is recommended that you watch the video twice and take notes the first time, rather than try to keep up with the quick pace. Enjoy!

And so it is with the Invitation of Gratitude; to experience the richness and true texture of it in our lives, we cannot give thanks for just the seemingly obvious and 'good', but we must also soften ourselves to, and give thanks for the not so good moments, the hard losses and tough lessons, and the times we've been humbled to our knees. In this class, we'll use deep hip opening (via the external rotators), shoulder stretches, and hand-balances (such as eka pada koundinyasana, bakasana, eka pada galavasana, and bhujapidasana) to work our way towards kurmasana (tortoise pose), appreciating equally the berries and thorns we meet along the way, just as we strive to do in our everyday lives.
