Shannon Michael Terry . . .
In Shannon's music one finds meditation, mystery, new worlds to explore with room for the listeners own creative powers to blossom. He has immersed himself in the art of sound and music, developing his talents in composition, arrangement, sound design and music production. As a musician, Shannon plays the Array Mbira, kalimba, flute and keyboard. He has a special talent for and interest in overtone singing and vocal improvisation.
In 1993, Shannon began studying with Jonathan Glasier, a former assistant to micro-tonal pioneer Harry Parch. Jonathan is a master musician and inventor of musical instruments. At that time Shannon explored the history and structure of overtone singing, micro-tonal music and instrument building. Music goes beyond the twelve-tone scale.
In 1996, Shannon was featured as an overtone singer on the soundtrack for the documentary Mystery of the Sphinx. He traveled to Egypt to sing and record inside the great pyramid, Cheops.
In 1997, Shannon became resident artist and composer at the Bureau of Arts and Culture in Los Angeles. There he began to explore the relationship between visual art and music, creating original compositions for art exhibitions. He recently produced a compilation recording of this music entitled Breathing Sound: Original Compositions for Art Exhibitions. Shannon's residency at the bureau also led to the creation of the the Open Door Orchestra, a revolving ensemble of players from around the world. Their music utilizes an array of instrumentation with both primitive and contemporary influences. In the fall of 2000, Shannon completed and produced a recording of this music entitled the Open Door Orchestra.
In 1998, he collaborated with legendary percussionist Bobbie Hall to create the world beat ambient soundtrack for a documentary film on the Burning Man Festival.
In 1999, as a member of Earth Action Artists, an organization promoting environmental awareness, he composed music for Awakening, a multi-media air ballet, featuring aerial dance troupe Bandaloop. This was a creative protest against new oil exploration and was performed at the earth summit meeting in Buenos Aires.
